The cradle
of the Carthusian order, the emerald of the Alps as Stendhal loved to describe
it, the Chartreuse became a Regional Natural Park in 1995. Spread over 60
municipalities between the departments of Isère and Savoy, plains, hills and
highlands make it an exceptional area just minutes away from Grenoble, Chambery
or Voiron, and only an hour away from Lyon.
This pre-Alpine mountain range, protected by its reclassification as the
Chartreuse Regional Natural Park, has managed to preserve its sites despite being
a longstanding tourist destination. The charm and simplicity of its
villages, traditional gîtes and B&Bs, its magnificent spruce forests, torrents,
and panoramic viewpoints offer visitors a variety of attractive features while
providing an extensive range of equipment for Alpine and cross-country
skiing.
Notoriety most likely due to bearing the same name as the world famous liqueur,
the Chartreuse has the reputation for
being the most frequented tourist attraction in the Dauphinois area. Namely: the
Plateau des Petites Roches, a well know site for gliding, the Monastery of the
Grande Chartreuse and the Church of Saint-Hugues.
